A Year in the Life of a Ragdoll

John and I adopted Franklin in September of 2023. He was about 8 weeks old, weighed 2 pounds, and was a curious cat with a lot to say.

In that time, with the help of this blog, John and I have discovered not just a lot about raising a kitten (my first time, and for John his first adoption as a full-fledged adult) but a lot about the Ragdoll breed itself. And Franklin still has a ton to say. All. The. Time.

Here are a few of my favorite blog posts depicting some of the most interesting facts and aspects of Franklin's life as a Ragdoll:

Ragdoll cats grow slower than most other cat breeds. Franklin won't reach true adulthood until he is about 4 years old, while more common breeds reach adulthood by 1-2 years old. As a 1-year-old cat, he has become the small version of his adult-self. His fur has transitioned from kitten fur to cat fur, and winter coat to summer coat. He is long and athletic, and from here on out he will have a few more growth spurts, reaching his final form at 4 years old. John is a little worried that he is so small, but I personally love it.

Male Ragdolls tend to weigh between 12-20 pounds, and Franklin is currently at 8 pounds. That means over the next 3 years, as long as he gains another healthy 4 pounds, he is right on par with his gender and breed. Plus he is easily scoopable, and I love carrying him around and letting him snuggle on my chest. If he weighs too much more I won't be able to do those things with him— or at least for as long.

Franklin's personality is pretty much set. He is a talker, a lover, a picky-eater, and an explorer. Franklin loves me and John, and his big brother, Kap. He is fascinated by other cats, loves to hunt bugs, and absolutely does not like or trust other humans.

You can read about his love of "stranger danger" in the following blog posts:

I am very excited to see his growth continue over the next three years, and then get to enjoy him as a fully grown adult cat. Franklin is the sweetest, most loving cat I have ever met and I am so lucky and thankful to call him my fur baby.
