One of the big new changes that came with moving from the city to the desert is there are a ton of bugs. Which is very much not my favorite thing. So don't worry, I will not be sharing any photos of bugs in this blog post. I will be talking about them though, so if you really don't like bugs, maybe skip this blog and read one of the many others about Franklin and his adventures HERE.

But it is Franklin's favorite thing about moving to the desert! As a one-year-old cat, he is very much in the hunting phase of his life. In our old apartment in the city he would try his best to catch flies, but there weren't enough for him, so we got him lots of toys on strings to dangle in front of him that gave him the sense of hunting bugs. Now in our new home he (unfortunately) has a wide variety of bugs to hunt that include but are not limited to: moths, crickets, spiders, cockroaches, and grasshoppers.
The most common bug that has gotten into our home is the moth. Both times we moved our stuff from the moving trucks and into the house we locked the boys in the bedroom and left the door open for easy access for us, which of course allowed all sorts of bugs to also come right on in. The problem though is the moth(s) that flew in decided our house would be the perfect spot to have babies in, so every day we are finding moths all over the place. Thankfully Franklin loves to hunt these little guys, and he's gotten really good at catching them.
He doesn't go after spiders often, unfortunately for me, but he does kill the cockroaches, which is awesome. The downside is he usually chews on them and leaves their bodies for us to find and clean up. He usually leaves them where he finds them in the garage though, which I'm fine with. I don't want to find them in the house.

His favorite bug is the cricket. We get some in the garage on occasion, and since the garage is attached and we leave the door open for the boys to go in and out, that means the crickets can go in and out too. Franklin LOVES hunting them. He'll bite them, throw them up into the air, and play with them in the spastic way that only cats can. I do feel bad for the crickets, because Franklin doesn't seem to understand (or care?) that the crickets are still alive when he's playing with them. So it usually takes a couple chomps for the crickets to die. Big brother Kap loves when Franklin does this though because since Franklin doesn't eat the crickets, just plays with them, Kap gets to eat the crickets. It's gross all around but hey, as Disney taught us, it's the circle of life.
My hope is that now that we have most of our furniture moved in and don't need to keep the doors open for long periods of time, the amount of bugs that come into the house will lessen. I know that number won't reach zero, but I am grateful that Franklin is on the hunt doing his best to try and get that number down to zero.
