What is a "Ragdoll" and How Does Franklin Fit the Bill?

Writer's picture: Miranda MorrisseyMiranda Morrissey

According to Wikipedia, a Ragdoll is “a breed of cat with a distinct colorpoint coat and blue eyes." They are soft-furred and, in most people’s correct opinion, absolutely gorgeous, with a very cuddly and loving personality.

THE LOOK

Ragdoll Cats World lists six main color types of Ragdolls: seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, flame, and cream; as well as six patterns: colorpoint, bicolor, mitted, lynx, tortie, and sepia/mink/solid. Franklin is a seal colorpoint, which means he has very dark features: His nose, ears, legs, and tail are all dark brown, and the coat along his back seems to be darkening as well (but only time will tell if it stays a cream-like color or gets darker!). Franklin also has blue eyes, a distinguishing feature for all Ragdolls.

THE LOVE

Many owners like to enter their cats in shows for praise and awards, which means these kittens can be sold for a few thousand dollars. John and I wanted to adopt a kitten of this breed for the character traits of being very loving and affectionate, and boy did we get it with Franklin. (And no, we thankfully did not pay thousands of dollars for him). After about the first half hour of having Franklin home, where he ran around exploring the apartment, he has been constantly underfoot or in our laps. He hates when we leave the room, and he is very vocal about hating when we close a door. When we pick him up in our arms he immediately goes "boneless" meaning he has sunk into us and is ready for snuggling. This is the reason this breed of cat is called "Ragdoll," after the floppy doll that also has "no bones."

THE TALKING

We had no idea Franklin would be this noisy! He meows more often than not, no matter what John and I are doing, and his meows are LOUD. I refer to them as meow-screams sometimes as he really is trying to let us know what he wants: food, playtime, or snuggles. And, according to our research and unfortunately the vet, it seems that Franklin will be talking to us all the time. If only we knew what he was saying! I honestly don’t mind the constant meowing most of the time. It actually gives me peace of mind knowing where Franklin is at all times. I jokingly call it his “echo location” as if he needed to meow to find his way around the apartment. But yeah, it really sucks when he wakes up in the middle of the night because nighttime is for quiet time, not Franklin crawling up to your ear to yell directly into it that he needs attention time.

THE CONCLUSION

If we aren’t careful, John and I will go deaf from our loving, snuggly, screaming, seal point Ragdoll.
